Senior Spotlight: Meet Vena & Toan

posted in: Senior Spotlight

Where are you from and what brought you to Seattle?

Vena and Toan are high school sweethearts and have been married for 53 years! They both attended high school in Quang Ngai, a city in Central Vietnam. Toan served as a Lieutenant in the Vietnamese Army and worked alongside the US military during the Vietnam War. During that time, Vena was an elementary school teacher who taught fourth graders Math, Physics, and History. In 1993, Toan and Vena moved to Seattle.

Upon coming to Seattle, Vena and Toan both took classes at South Seattle Community College. They also both worked for the same electric company before retiring a few years ago. They have raised five children together here and both love Seattle –especially the weather.

How are you connected to SPSC and what are some of your favorite activities at the center?

SPSC is a special place for both Toan and Vena. SPSC helps to keep them active – and feeling young, energetic, and healthier. They appreciate how kind and welcoming SPSC staff have been and feel that SPSC is a place they can call home.

Toan and Vena both love participating in SPSC hosted field trips. They also enjoy Karaoke and dancing at the weekly dinners. Toan plays guitar – and if you are lucky, you might be able to catch his musical talents during Karaoke on Friday nights at SPSC.

Interests and hobbies

Vena enjoys dancing and singing and has taught both! In addition to practicing and playing guitar, Toan finds time to stay physically active by playing volleyball. Vena and Toan both love traveling and spending time with their friends.
