SPSC recently hosted a presentation from the Alzheimer’s Association where our Seniors had the opportunity to learn about the common warning signs of the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease.

In addition to learning the common warning signs, the presenters discussed the difference between normal aging and Alzheimer’s, and the importance of early detection and benefits of diagnosis.

The 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s include:

  1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
  2. Challenges in planning or solving problems
  3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks
  4. Confusion with time and place
  5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
  6. New problems with words in speaking or writing
  7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
  8. Decreased or poor judgment
  9. Withdrawal from work or social activities
  10. Changes in mood or personality.

The seniors who attended this educational program were divided in two groups, Spanish speakers and English speakers, and the presentation was done simultaneously in two separate rooms.  The presenters showed slides and video clips keeping the senior’s attention and engagement. Both groups participated actively asking questions and showing great interest to learn common signs of the disease and to know what to watch for in themselves and others, as well as tips to approach someone who is experiencing changes in their memory.

This was the last presentation for 2023 as part of SPSC’s Wealth of Health initiative.
